Promotion and other BIG news.
CONGRATULATIONS
STAFF SERGEANT LANCE HEINZELMAN

Here's the rundown:
Promotion ceremony. I walk up, get my coin and certificate, picture taken, and Vanessa and Tom punch me in the arm.

SHE SAID YES! I'M ENGAGED!
I know, I know, it was a a day ago, but I didn't have any time to write yesterday. So now I'm engaged. It feels no different (maybe because we were practically engaged already) but everything is. Everyone at the ceremony went wild.
After the ceremony, the Wing Commander usually gets up and gives a little speech, but this time he said he was going to deviate a little. He then said "we have a special presentation," and headed me the microphone. I got up from my seat, walked in front of the assembly (probably around 300 people or so) and called up SGT Dempsey. Once we were on the stage, I said, "Vanessa, you've been my butterfly..." and the crowd went WILD! For five whole minutes there were cheers and constant applause. I even stirred up the crowd by waving my hand and asking them to cheer louder. After the applause died down, I finished my statement, "You've been my shining shooting star, and now it would be my priviledge and my honor (drop to one knee) if you'd be my wife. Will you marry me?" Again, the crowd went wild, and no one heard her say "yes" but me. I put the ring on her finger, stood up, gave her a hug, and a short kiss, one more hug, and looked out at the crowd. Applause ripped through the room for another five minutes, before I finally walked her over to the Wing Commander, thanked him, and we went back to our seats. Once the Colonel had said his piece, Vanessa and I stood around, getting two comments over and over. "Congratulations - for getting promoted / for getting engaged, and she did say yes, right?" We thanked everyone, and left.
After we got home, we decided to go out to dinner (sushi) and then went home. She was tired, but I was wired from all the stress and excitement, so I stayed up and watched a movie, then went to bed.
So, now you know what happened.
Enjoy the photos.
